EDMONTON FEDERATION CEMETERY

Since 2015, the Federation of Synagogues has made available to the public, through JCR-UK and JGSGB, details of all burials at the Federation's cemetery at Edmonton, London N18 (as well as its cemetery at Rainham, Essex).

The Federation has also now launched its own more comprehensive, up-to-date and easy to use database of these records (which, however, requires the exact name of the deceased) and includes a detailed map showing the position of the grave. Click here to see it in action.

The Federation of Synagogues was established in 1887 by Samuel Montagu (later Lord Montagu of Swaythling), Liberal MP for Whitechapel and a committed Orthodox Jew.
The Federation offered its member synagogues (small congregations in the East End of London comprised mainly of Yiddish speaking immigrants) a range of central services including recognition by the civil authorities for marriage purposes and representation at communal institution level.

Almost from the outset, the Burial Society of the Federation proved pivotal; levels of infant mortality were high and burial fees charged by other synagogue bodies were prohibitive.

In 1889, Lord Montagu presented a strip of his family land in Edmonton to the Federation of Synagogues for use as a burial site and the Federation Burial Society was formally established the following year. Edmonton Federation cemetery has the capacity for nearly 40,000 graves and is currently at 98% capacity.

Notable figures buried in Edmonton include Lord Montagu himself, two Sassover Rebbes z"tl, Rav Eliezer Gordon (the 'Telzer Rav'), Rav Reuven Dov Dessler z"tl (the father of R'Eliyahu Dessler) and Dayan Gershon Lopian z"tl. In 2018, the Federation published a book, Edmonton Federation Cemetery, by Rebbetzin Aviva Landau, which takes a look at the lives of prominent rabbonim and communal leaders buried at the cemetery, and contains over 50 detailed biographies and rare photographs.

Main Index

This is the main index of all people buried at the Edmonton Cemetery from 1890 until January 2022 and contains over 39,100 interments. It represents Update No. 6, with the most recent interments and some corrections to existing data – much of it based on feedback from visitors to the site.

For each interment we show name, reference number, date of death, age of death and grave position (block, row & grave number).

The index is divided into sections listed alphabetically by surname.
There is one line per letter, with the second column indicating the number of surnames in the index beginning with that letter.
Subsequent columns break down the data further according to the second letter of the surname.
Simply click on the two letters that form the first two letters of the surname for which you are looking.
For example: :
If you click on AA, it will take you to the section of the index that lists all surnames beginning with Aa;
AB will take you to all surnames beginning with Ab, and so on.
