PROJECT STATUS
Since this is an on-going project for the fifteen data bases, we present here a table of the statuses of six sequential work phases (2-7 below) for each of the new/current and previous GNDBs, updated as this project proceeds; status is given by an index of completion on a scale from 0 to 10. Item 1 is the number of records in the data base. It should be noted that each record can contain a few or many names, so although the number of records is an indicator of the number of groups of names for a region, it does not indicate the total number of name-variants used in that region. Individual indexes of completion are also given for the ten foreign countries to which European emigrants immigrated.
In general, the indexes of most importance to users are numbers 4 (Enter archival Hebrew/Yiddish/EuroSecular names), 5 (Enter foreign Hebrew/Yiddish/Vernacular names), and 1 (Number of records in current/previous data bases); also of interest are the indexes for the foreign countries. Indexes 4, 5, and 1 give estimates of how close to completion is the entry of names in the records of each data base. For a number of the data bases (particularly Eastern and some Central European countries -- Germany, and France), the number of name-variant entries is two or three times as many for the new/current GNDB update as for the previous one.
