United Synagogue - Sheffield from 1 April 2015(ii)
(also known simply as the Kingfield Synagogue)

Former Names:

Sheffield Jewish Congregation and Centre from about 1994(iii)
(initially known as the United Hebrew Congregation, Sheffield or the United Sheffield Hebrew Congregation)(iv)

Current Address:

The Kingfield Centre, Psalter Lane (corner of Brincliffe Crescent), Nether Edge, Sheffield S11 8UX, from January 2000.

The synagogue, built next to the Jewish community centre, Kingfield Hall, was consecrated by Chief Rabbi Jonathan Sacks on 19 March 2000.(v)

Previous Address:

11 Wilson Road, Ecclesall, Sheffield S11 8RN, (which had been the address of the Sheffield Hebrew Congregation from 3 April 1930). For details of Jewish Heritage Site listings, see here.

The synagogue closed in 1997 became the "City Church" in 2000.(x)

Formation:

The congregation was formed on the merger on 1 April 1953 of the city's two Jewish congregations, the Sheffield Hebrew Congregation and the Sheffield Central Hebrew Congregation.(xi)

The agreement to merge was ratified by Sheffield Hebrew Congregation on 10 March 1953 and by Sheffield Central Hebrew Congregation on 3 March 1953.(xii)

On 1 April 2015, the Congregation joined the United Synagogue as a full member,(xiii) the first community based outside London and the Home Counties to become a member of the organisation since it was founded in 1870.(xiv)
Previously, it was provincial synagogue under the aegis of the Chief Rabbi.

  • (xviii) Rabbi Chait was listed as minister of the congregation in Jewish Year Bookss to 1972. His death in office was reported in The Jewish Chronicle of 3 November 1972.

  • (xix) Rev. Brysh was listed as reader of the congregation in Jewish Year Books 1970 through 1975 and as minister of the editions 1976 through 1985. The Jewish Chronicle reported on 10 October 1969 of his appointment as minister-reader of the congregation and on 3 October 1986 on his farewell address "from the pulpit of the Wilson Road Synagogue".

  • (xx) Rev. Katanka was listed as minister of the congregation in Jewish Year Books 1986 through 1990. The Jewish Chronicle reported on 17 May 1985 of his appointment as the new minister of the congregation and on 8 June 1990 on his resignation, with regret, to take up a post at Golders Green Synagogue, London.

  • (xxi) Rev. Kohn was not listed as minister of the congregation in any Jewish Year Book. The Jewish Chronicle reported on 30 November 1990 of his appointment as minister of the congregation and on 31 May 1991 referred to his departure.

  • (xxii) Rev. Golomb was listed as reader of the congregation in Jewish Year Books from 1995 through 2002 and as minister from 2003 until the last publication (2015). The Jewish Chronicle reported on 24 January 1992 of his upcoming appointment as minister of the congregation. He was still shown as minister on the congregation's website, last accessed 18 February 2022.
