Rabbi Abraham Moses Monusson - Jewish Chronicle - August 28 1936
- The death in Leeds, last week, of Rabbi Abraham Moses Monusson, Rav of the Gateshead Community, recalls some of the harrowing memories of the Russian Pogroms of 1905. The deceased, who was a native of Wilno, received his first appointment as Rav in Kiev. His next appointment was at Sednow, and it was during his stay there that he, his wife and family suffered all the terror of a brutal pogrom. Their home was wrecked, and they were subjected to physical violence of the worst form. One daughter was so injured that she afterwards became a cripple. The deceased came to Sunderland to the home of his brother-in-law, Rabbi H. Hurwitz and shortly thereafter was appointed Rav at Grimsby. There he remained for some seventeen years, the last of which were clouded by tragedy. His wife, two daughters, and his elder son all died within the space of two years. Some seven years ago he became Rav at Gateshead. There his younger son died, and he himself became seriously ill, with the result that he became completely incapacitated. For the last few years he lived at the home of his son-in-law and daughter (Rabbi and Mrs. J. Gold of Leeds). The deceased was a modest and scholarly man who bore his avalanche of misfortunes with piety and fortitude. He never murmured against his lot. He had great ability as a preacher and was the author of a book of discourses "Maarche Adam". Prior to the Interment at the New Farnley Cemetery, Leeds, memorial addresses were delivered at the Psalms of David Synagogue, by Rabbis H. Hurwitz, N. Greenspan and Landinski (Gateshead). May the Almighty comfort his only surviving daughter!
