The Jewish Section of the Byker and Heaton Municipal Cemetery, known as the Heaton Cemetery,
was consecrated and opened in 1915 by the Jesmond Hebrew Congregation.
The database contains 404 burials.
The cemetery comprises 4 long rows of burials which are organised into three sections identified as
QN, RN and SN. This is illustrated in the annotated Google Earth image shown
here.
This database has been derived from the 2019 dataset transcribed by Deborah Ross
initially for JOWBR including headstone photographs provided by Peter Gatoff. The previous cemetery plan was supplemented by Deborah
Ross through additional research, including visits to the cemetery, the Tyne and Wear Archives and the
Discovery Museum, Newcastle upon Tyne.
Details of burials burials in the Heaton Cemetery are provided in this database, together with images of
all legible and partially legible headstones.
Information for any individual may be displayed by first selecting the appropriate surname letter from
the list below and then selecting the required name from its drop-down list.

Assembly of the most recent JOWBR database was carried out by Deborah Ross who has given permission for its
use in this project. Headstone photographs were provided to JCR-UK by Peter Gatoff and supplemented in a
few cases with those taken by Deborah Ross. This database was created by Alan
Tobias from the database assembled by Deborah Ross and the work was initiated by the JCR-UK Webmaster David Shulman.
