1493 Document referring to the Synagogue that Jews "tuvieron" (had) in the town of Pastrana, Spain.
Seeking full translation of document from Spanish to English (3 pages). The document was written in the Spanish language utilizing the Courtesan script writing style.
See Spain’s National Archives (PARES). Reference Number: RGS, LEG,149307,7. Reference Code: ES.47161.AGS//RGS,LEG,149307,7.
Date:1493-07-30, Barcelona, Spain
Remarks: The 1493 document thanks the guardian and friars of Santa María de Gracia and mentions the medieval synagogue once located in the town of Pastrana, Spain (Page 1). The surname Pastrana is toponymic and comes from this town (Pastrana).
NOTES: Spain National Archives (PARES) titled the attached document: "Merced al convento de Santa María de Gracia, de Pastrana, de la sinagoga* que los judíos** tuvieron en dicha villa." Sinagoga* = Synagogue, Judios** = Jews. The Monastery of "Santa María de Gracia" is now known as the Convent of "San Francisco".

Akta 8 is my great-great-grandfather’s first-cousin’s 1858 death record from Zaręby Kościelne, Łomza, Poland. I would be grateful if someone could translate it in full (or at least everything that isn’t the standard wording of a death record).
Names that I would expect to see in the text are:
- the deceased: Cyrla ZARĘBER;
- her father: Juśk, son of Szmul ZARĘBER & Golda Chajmowna;
- her mother: Zelda, daughter of Abraham WAJNTROB & Mirka Idźkowicz.

I cannot read the Town name written on this Draft Registration Card. It looks like Bogania Russia? Looking for help in reading this town name.
Sol's siblings were born in (what later became) northeast Poland, in places like Suchopol, Szereszow, Grodno, Porzecze. I know this area was previously Russian when Sol was born, and then later Russian again (now Belarus). And I know names of places were spelled with lots of variations as a result.
Still, I'd love to know what his town of birth was, and what it was known as around 1941 which is when the last letters from his family there were received.

1839 Montefiore census of Safed, Sephardim kolel - widows & orphans sheet (Endowment scan 11720005). New colour photo from the Endowment.
In the widows column, three consecutive cells read "אם חפצן", "אם יעקב מלול", "אם יוסף ערער". In the wide blank column to their left, level with the middle one, two words are written (panel B) - the only writing in that half of it.
I now lean to a gloss rather than a later-added entry: the widows column has several empty ruled lines below its last entry, so anyone adding a widow had room inside it, and this sits level with a mid-column row, not at the foot.
Could you please read the two words? And if it is a gloss of the form "אם [name]" - "also the mother of X" - is the second word a personal name?
I get "אם" then an unread word closing with a final nun. "לא" I would reject: no lamed ascender (panel D). Panel C: three "אם" cells in the register hand.

Image found at a link from Matricula. It is a page from a Family Register book (book 76) for Jewish families in the town. The page is for a particular Kaufmann family group, with parents, grandparents, and 9 children. I'm interested in extracting ALL information on this family included on this page, including names, birth/marriage/death dates, and especially any notes or comments. I have some of this deciphered, but also need a different set of eyes in case I have missed things, or misinterpreted things. |
