congregations throughout the British Isles and Gibraltar, both past and present.

Congregation Data

Name:

Golders Green and District JRU

Address:

None - meetings held at hired venues.

Formation and Affiliation:

The congregation was an abortive attempt by the Jewish Religious Union (a precurser of Liberal Judaism) to form a Liberal/Progressive Jewish congregation in Golders Green, where Jewish families had only recently started to settle. An initial meeting to establish the congregation was held in May 1914 in Willifield Club House in Temple Fortune NW11 followed by other meetings and services. However, it would appear that there was, at the time, little demand for such a congregation in the Golders Green area and, by 1915, the attempt had proved unsuccessful, the then small local community deciding to set up a more traditional form of congregation.(i)

Current Status:

Closed

Ritual:

Liberal Progressive

Rabbi:

None, although Rabbi Dr. Israel Isador Mattuck, the minister of the The Jewish Liberal Synagogue, St. Johns Wood, had been one of the principal initiators of the congregation.(ii)

Local Government District:

Golders Green, a residential suburb in Northwest London with a substantial Jewish minority, is in the London Borough of Barnet,(iii) created in 1965, within the administrative area of Greater London. It was previously in the former Municipal Borough of Hendon, incorporated as a borough in 1932, which prior to that, was the former Hendon Urban District, created 1894, both within the former county of Middlesex.
