Gun Yard (or Gun Square), off Hounsditch, London EC3(i)

Date Formed:

1792(ii) - one of the three minor congregations established in London in the eighteenth century. The others were the Rosemary Lane Congregation and the Cutler Street "Polish" Synagogue.

Current Status:

The congregation relocated from Gun Yard / Square, sometime before 1870, initially to Mansell Street, and then to become the Scarborough Street Synagogue, which closed in the 1920s.

Affiliation:

Initially, may have been a dependency of the New Synagogue. Its succcessor congregation, Scarborough Street Synagogue, was a founding member of the Federation of Synagogues

Local Government Districts:

Gun Yard/Square was (and the northern section of Mansell Street is) in the Portsoken Ward of the City of London, within the administrative area of Greater London. Until the abolition in 1908 of civil parishes in the City, they were within the parish of St. Botolph Without Aldgate.

  • (i) Gun Square, previously known as Gun Yard, has been redeveloped and the square/yard no longer exists. It lay to the east of the southern end of Hounsditch, approximately in the current position of St. Botolph Building. (Not to be confused with Gun Street in Spitalfields, further to the North.).

  • (ii) The Federation of Synagogues 1887-1987 by Geoffrey Alderman, p. 20, where reference is made to the origins of Scarborough Street Synagogue, the successor congregation.
