Notes & Sources ( returns to text above)

  • (i) The congregation was a 'landsmanshaft' for Jews from the city of Kovno, Lithuania, which was within the Russian Empire (until 1918) and the Soviet Union (1940-1990).

  • (ii) Catherine Wheel Alley is a short narrow street in the City of London, running west from what is now the northern section of Middlesex Street (which forms the border with the London Borough of Tower Hamlets) in the direction of Bishopsgate. Previously, Catherine Wheel Alley ran along the back of, and parallel with, Windsor Street (now a short section of Middlesex Street).
