Borough of North Tyneside

North Tyneside is a metropolitan borough in the county of Tyne and Wear in the North East of England. It was created in 1974 upon the merger of several authorities, including the boroughs of Tynemouth and most of Whitley Bay, all of which were then part of the county of Northumberland. In 1986, North Tyneside became a unitary authority, when the metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear lost its administrative status, becoming purely a ceremonial county.

Towns in the borough include the port of North Shields (formerly in the county borough of Tynemouth), situated opposite South Shields on the north side of the Tyne estuary, and the seaside town of Whitley Bay, located few miles to the north on the North Sea coast.

Registration District (for BMD): North Tyneside (since 1 April 1985).
- Previous Registration Districts for both North Shields and Whitley Bay:
     Tynemouth (from 1 July 1837 until 1 October 1936);
     Northumberland South (from 1 October 1936 until 1 April 1974);
     North Tyneside East (from 1 April 1974 until 1 April 1985).

North Tyneside Jewish Cemeteries Information

Details of the Jewish cemeteries in North Tyneside (for databases, see above):

Hazelrigg Jewish Cemetery (Orthodox), Coach Lane, Gosforth. Situated in the part of Hazelrigg within North Shields (i.e. east of the A1 road). Opened 1906, having initially been acquired by Newcastle Corporation Street Synagogue. Still in use by the Newcastle United Hebrew Congregation. Search the JCR-UK-hosted Hazelrigg Jewish Cemetery Database, including burial records and photographs of the headstones.
Preston Road Cemetery, Jewish Section, Preston Road North, North Shields. The cemetery of the now defuct North Shields Synagogue. Opened in 1856. Contains approximately 60 graves.
Newcastle Reform Synagogue Cemetery. This is the cemetery of the Newcastle Reform Synagogue and is situated at the other end of the Preston Road Cemetery in North Shields.
Whitley New Cemetery, Jewish Section, Blythe Road (A193), Whitley Bay, near St Mary's Lihghthouse. Opened 1953. Search the JCR-UK-hosted Whitley Bay Jewish Cemetery Database, including burial records and photographs of the headstones.
There were two other, now lost, early 19th century Jewish burial plots in North Shields, at Hawkies Lane (opened about 1820) and Chirton. Those interred in the latter plot were reinterred at the Preston Road Cemetery in 1924.
