Founding and Ritual: |
The congregation was founded in 1974(ii) as an "independent
traditional community following the philosophy of Rabbi Dr. L. Jacobs"(iii),
being a daughter congregation of the
New London Synagogue.
Although initially an independent Orthodox congregation, the
congregation gradually adopted a Masorti (Conservative) ritual. |
Affiliation: |
The congregation became a founding member of the Assembly of Masorti Synagogues when that organisation was established in 1985
(being the second longest established Masorti congregation in the UK) and has the
status of constituent synagogue of the organisation (known as
Masorti Judaism
since 2012).(iv)
It is the largest Masorti synagogue in terms of number of members and
has been so for many years. |

Legal &
Charitable Status: |
On 24 July 2002, the congregation (which was
previously a charitable trust established on 10 November 1974) was
incorporated as a registered charitable company, The New North London Synagogue
(company no. 04493731), a private company limited by guarantee without a
share capital (and with an exemption from use of the word 'Limited'). On
1 May 2003 the assets of the trust were transferred to the
company.(xvi)
The congregation is also a registered charity (no. 1094668)
registered on 18 November 2002.(xvii)
The governing documents are the company's Memorandum & Articles
Association dated 24 July 2002, as amended. |

Finchley, a residential suburb in Northwest London, is in the London
Borough of Barnet, within the administrative area of Greater London,
both of which entities were established on 1 April 1965. |
