Posterngate Synagogue

Address and Formation:

Posterngate, off Hull Market Place, Hull.⁽ⁱⁱ⁾

The synagogue had been a Roman Catholic chapel sacked by the mob in June 1780 in the anti-Catholic Gordon riots, lead by Lord George Gordon (who subsequently converted to Judaism). It was acquired later that year by five Jewish families, restored and converted into a synagogue.⁽ⁱⁱⁱ⁾

Secessionist Congregation:

In 1809, following disagreemens with officials of the congregation, a group of members broke away to form the Parade Row Synagogue.

Closure:

The synagogue was in use until 1826, when the congregation reunited with members of the Parade Row Synagogue to form the Hull Old Hebrew Congregation at Robinson Row.^(iv)

The building was probably demolished in 1994.^(v)
