In Our Group (cont.)

The agronomist Feigin of blessed memory, who worked among the Jewish farmers in Bessarabia as a counselor from the ORT organization, would often visit our city. Even though he was busy, he would give of his time for discussions with the members and lectures about life in the kibbutz, the group, the workers settlements and the Moshava.

An important Zionist activity, which led many of the community of workers to found a chapter of Haoved (The Worker) in our community, sprung up in the wake of the visit of the emissary from the Land of Israel Geler (who was killed in 1937 in the Galilee). His purpose was to prepare professionals over the age of 35 who were needed by the Mandatory Government for aliya, and to provide them with the aliya permits. Tzeirei Zion did a great deal for preparing members of Haoved for aliya, and many indeed registered for aliya and made aliya to the Land.

In 1934, a chapter of Buslia opened up in our city through the efforts of Tzeirei Zion. After some time (around 1935) the Hachshara group of Buslia was established. The yoke of strengthening it and leading it was placed completely upon the workers and responsible people of Tzeirei Zion. The members of the various Buslia chapters in Bessarabia turned to our Hachshara group. At first, the pioneers worked at wood chopping, with the desire to find jobs that were more lucrative and stable. However, the state of labor in the marketplace was depressed, and it was hard to find work. The group dwindled greatly and was in danger of folding. Then, we found a way out of our crisis. We turned to David Dizengof of blessed memory (a relative of Meir Dizengof of blessed memory) who owned a factory for bricks and tiles, and we asked him to employ pioneers, even though the work was difficult and there was a question if the young people would be able to persevere with it. Despite this, he agreed to hire some of the pioneers for work as an experiment. He became convinced of their serious attitude to work, and he continued to obtain workers from among the pioneers. In the end, more than 50 members of the group worked in this factory, and thereby, its existence was assured for an extended period.

In 1935, Yosef Shprintzak visited Bessarabia. He was known to Bessarabian Jewry already from his successful work in Kishinev prior to his aliya to the Land. His appearances in public gatherings and participation in conventions left a deep impression upon the masses. Shprintzak appeared at a large gathering in the movie theater, which was too small to hold all the attendees. After this meeting, a party was arranged in honor of the guests, in which members of all of the streams of the movement in our city participated.

It was felt that black clouds were approaching and covered the skies of the Jewish street already a long time prior to the outbreak of the world war. However, who would have thought that the end would come so rapidly…
