It was not easy to arrive at this moment when I sent the book to be printed. It took me almost one year to collect the photos, to organize them, and write the captions. I did all this after my working hours. I succeeded in collecting 600 photos and stories, and for that, I thank the 800 people from Kiliya, some of whom perished in the Holocaust, some of whom were killed in the war, and some who died in Kiliya or in Israel.
The lists are not complete, and we still have more than 300 people who were not identified by the editor or his assistants.
We tried the best we could to describe what happened to our people and to publish this book for the generations to come.
Many thanks to all who helped, especially to Misha Ianover and Meier Weisman. L.K.
We did not receive any pictures or have any news from the following people from Kiliya:
Alperin, Aharonovich, Bibergel, Borshtein, Doiben, Falik, Feierman, Feldman, Fish, Filvich, Gutman, Goldshtein, Gleizer, Gertsberg, Golov, Grosman, Goberman, Imes, Khaiut, Khritonover, Khacham, Kagrelitsky, Kichmar, Kisilensky, Klein, Koltochnik, Kravits, Kushnir, Leibovich, Leventon, Leitenzon, Liberman, Lipovtski, Litvak, Margulis, Mendelovich, Moskovich, Natanzon, Nudeleman, Oifen, Pavrany, Pais, Pesakhovich, Perlman, Perfliutsky, Polonsky, Reifman, Rozenberg, Roizen, Ribak, Shepkar, Shadkhen, Sheiner, Shmercus, Shkolnik, Shemklerman, Shteinmets, Tabakman, Teper, Teitleboim, Talis Weiner, Weisleib, Zeltsman, Zilberman, Zilbershtein, Zusman

Tanya Meier-Weinshtein. Tanya was born in Kiliya in 1926. She was evacuated in 1941 to Stalingrad, and after that to Kazakhstan, where she performed difficult work as a mechanic in an electrical factory.
After the war, she studied to be a nurse and worked at a clinic from 1947 to 1972. She arrived in Israel and started working as a nurse at the Levenshtein Hospital. She settled in Hetzelia. In 1981, she became very sick with an incurable illness. For the last ten years of her life, she worked part-time at a clinic in Raanana.
She did not feel sorry for herself, but instead she helped the sick, her friends, and her loved ones. She passed away on the 6th of November 1991. Per her last request, she is buried in Netanya.

The Monument
When L. Konstantinovsky visited Kiliya in May 1990, the remnants of the Jewish community decided to erect a monument with a Magen David sign and conduct a proper Jewish ceremony. After six months, a monument with a strange star, instead of the Magen David, was erected. All the efforts to correct the design were unsuccessful, and, at the end, this monument, seen in the picture, was erected. After other six months, thanks to the efforts of Yasha Rabinovich (son of Milya and DoraYakovlevna), a plaque written in Hebrew was added.

The monument in memory of the 1800 Jewish people, men, women, old people, and children who were murdered in the Holocaust by the Fascists in 1941.
This monument was erected next to the mass grave at the Jewish cemetery in Kiliya.

Dora Yakovlevna Vasilkovskaya-Rabinovich.
It is difficult to believe that we will never again see this extraordinary, hard-working woman death is merciless.
Dora Yakovlevna saved thousands of people and offered the best gift there is life. She was a brilliant surgeon and a caring physician and never refused help to anyone.
In our multicultural region she was able to find a common language with each person: she spoke Russian to the Russians, Ukrainian to the Ukrainians, and Moldovan to the Moldavians. She went through the terrible war years right along with the suffering people, and she also rejoiced with them in the great victory over the Fascists.
She was respected by everyone, and the youth were drawn to her. She generously shared her rich experience, and many learned from her example. She was a Citizen of Honor of Kiliya. May the memory of this humble woman remain in the hearts of those who loved her for a long time.
Dunayskaya Zarya, October 15, 1991 (from the editor)
Taba Goldman-Konstantinovskaya. Taba was born in Kiliya on the Danube in 1910 into the family of Berl and Brana Konstantinovsky. She worked as a bookkeeper for Gamshievich. Together with her family and her mother, she was evacuated to Kazakhstan during WWII. Her husband, Samuil Goldman, fought in the war against the Fascists. He was a sergeant major who worked with mine clearance and pontoon engineering, and he helped free Budapest and Prague. He was decorated for bravery and for service in battle. He died in Akerman.
Taba was a true Kiliyan by blood and by upbringing. She always recalled the great Danube and life in Kiliya. She always included details about life in Kiliya in her many stories, which provided a colorful picture of the unique nature of Kiliya everyday life.
Taba was an intelligent, cheerful, educated, modern lady, and that is how we will remember her. She passed away on March 17, 1991, in Haifa.

People who passed away in 1991 (after the book was completed)
Dora Yakovlevna Vasilkovskaya-Rabinovich
This is the obituary published in the Dunayskaya Zarya, 15 October, 1991.
We are very sorry that we will never see Dora, an extraordinary, hard-working woman. Dora Yakovlevna gave to many people, she offered the best gift there islife. She was a brilliant surgeon and a physician and never asked for money from needy people. She worked in a multicultural region and spoke to the patients in their own language: Ukrainian, Russian, and Moldavian. She spent the war years among this diverse population and helped in the victory against the Fascists. She was an exemplary citizen and was decorated with Citizen of Honor of Kiliya. We will remember this extraordinary woman, and we will keep her memory in our hearts.
Arkadi Goldenberg. Arkadi was born in Kiliya 70 years ago in a working family of tinsmiths. He fought in the Second World War and received many medals of honor. He was known for his beautiful voice, and said Kadish at the Jewish cemetery, the only place where it was possible to say Kadish after the Soviet regime closed the four synagogues. In the summer of 1990, he participated at the meeting of the Jews of Kiliya where it was discussed to erect a monument for the victims killed by the Fascists. The meeting took place in Dora Yakovlevna's apartment in Kiliya. We are so sorry that both of them are no longer with us.
EsterYatsiv, the wife of Zeev (Vova) Yatsiv-Konstantinovsky, was one of the most active members of the Association of Kiliyans in Israel, from the day it was founded. She was active in WIZO [Women's International Zionist Organization] and did volunteer work for the absorption of new immigrants to Israel. Her work helped to minimize the social and cultural gaps in Israel. At the one year anniversary of her death, hundreds participated, among them the Chairperson of WIZO in Israel and the Chairperson of WIZO International.
Yeshayahu Bar David (Chichilnitsky) was born in Kiliya and came with his family to Eretz Israel in 1932. He participated in Zionist activities in Kiliya and was a member of Gordonia. He studied at the Tarbut School. In Israel, he worked very hard, and his last work was at the potash factory at the Dead Sea, the Dead Sea Works.
Taba Goldman-Konstantinovskaya. Taba was born in Kiliya in 1910 into the family of Berl and Brana Konstantinovsky. She worked as a bookkeeper for Gamshievich. Together with her family and her mother, she was evacuated to Kazakhstan during WWII. Her husband, Samuil Goldman, fought in the war against the Fascists. He was a sergeant major and went as far as Budapest and Prague. He was decorated for bravery. He died in Akerman. Taba was a real Kiliyan in her blood and in her education. She always recalled the great Danube, the life in Kiliya, and told many stories about the life in Kiliya. Her stories were an important source about the life of the Jewish community of Kiliya. Taba was an intelligent, educated, modern lady, and that's how we will remember her. She passed away on March 17, 1991, in Haifa.

Tanya Meer Weinshtein. Tanya was born in Kiliya in 1926. She was evacuated in 1941 to Stalingrad, and after that to Kazakhstan, where she worked hard as a mechanic in an electrical factory. After the war, she studied to be a nurse and worked at a clinic from 1947 to 1972. In Israel, she worked at the Levenshtein Hospital in Hetzelia. In 1981, she became very sick. In memory of my mother, Rachel Lerner Freizger, by her children Eliezer Nir and Sara Raz
Shaul Tchernikhovsky said, Man is a reflection of his native land landscape, and this best describes my mother, Rachel Lerner Freizger. A big part of her life she spent in Kiliya, her native town. In 1983, she went, for the first time since she came in 1938, on a trip outside Israel. We visited the United States with her, and everywhere we went, from Disney World to the Grand Canyon, near a river or a waterfall, she was delighted and said, I saw this already in my town, at the entrance of the Hospital, there was a fountain, at the river, there was a waterfall … and that continued during the entire trip. We were upset at the beginning: how can she compare the great America with Kiliya, but then we understood that in her own way, she wanted to teach us that even a small place has everything, and the first images we receive from our birth place are the pictures we carry with us our entire life.
She was born in 1904 into a Zionist family who educated their children in the spirit of Zionism and agricultural work. Although her father, Yeshayahu, was an ordained rabbi, he worked as a carpenter in order to earn money and did not depend on the community. She came to Eretz Israel in 1938 when life was not easy, but she never complained. She worked hard together with our father, and she took care to have a clean and neat home. She made sure the children got an education, because, for her to succeed in life, a good education was needed. My father died in 1968, and my mother was left alone, but she never complained and was always happy to host the family. She was lucky to see her six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She passed away in 1990.
