Congregation Data

Name:

Lubner and Lomzer Synagogue

Alternative Name:

Lubiner and Lodzer Synagogue

Address:

3 Lawrence Building, Cannon Street Road, London E1

(Location: Cannon Street Road, a main road in London's East End, is the continuation of New Road, extending about one-third of a mile south from Commercial Road to the Highway (which replaced George Street), crossing over Cable Street.)

Formation:

Formed, in about 1934, by the merger of:

Lubiner Synagogue
(the Lublin Synagogue)
of 3 Lawrence Buildings,
Cannon Street Road,
London E1

Lodzer Synagogue
(the Lodz Synagogue)
80-81 Davis Mansions, New Goulston Street, London E1

(Location: New Goulston Street is a short street (200 feet long) running east from Middlesex Street to Goulston Street, about 500 feet north of Aldgate High Street.)

Probably successor to:
Bikkur Cholim Sons of Lodz Chevra
Newcastle Street, London E1
(although this may have been a different congregation)

Founded by 1919

Bikkur Cholim Sons of Lodz had been founded by 1887 (see "Affiliation" below).  The designation "Lodz Synagogue" appears in the first Jewish Book of 1896-1897.

Current Status:

Closed, after 1947. Amalgamated with Fieldgate Street Great Synagogue

Ritual:

Orthodox - Ashkenazi

Affiliation:

An affiliated synagogue of the Federation of Synagogues, as were the two separate synagogues prior to the merger.

Bikkur Cholim Sons of Lodz Chevra was one of the 21 or 22 original members of the Federation of Synagogues formed on 6 November 1887 (listed by V. D. Lipman in his "Social History of the Jews in England 1850-1950" - pp120-121), although it does not appear to have been one of the congregations that attended the meeting of 16 October 1887 at which it was agreed to form the Federation.

Membership Data:

Lubiner Synagogue

1919 - 75 members (source)

Lodzer Synagogue

1896 - 104 members (source)

1905 -   50 members (source)

1915 -   63 members (source)

Local Government Districts:

Cannon Street Road and New Goulston Street are now in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, created on 1 April 1965, within the administrative area of Greater London.

Previously, both streets were in the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney (established 1900) in the County of London (established 1889), both of which entities were abolished in 1965.

Cannon Street Road had been in the civil parish of St George in the East and New Goulston Street had been in the civil parish of Whitechapel, both of which civil parishes were abolished in 1927 to be absorbed into Stepney Borough parish, which was itself abolished 1965. Until 1889, these parishes were in the former County of Middlesex until 1889.

From 1856 to 1900, the Vestry (council) of the Parish of St George in the East and the board of Whitechapel District (of which the civil parish of Whitechapel was a constituent) were local authorities, with functions similar to that of a local government district council.

Registration Districts:

Lubiner Synagogue
From 1 July 1837 - St George in the East

Lodzer Synagogue
From 1 July 1837 - Whitechapel

Both Synagogues and following Merger
From 1 January 1926 - Stepney
Since 1 January 1983 - Tower Hamlets (which now holds the registers)
