Notes & Sources ( returns to text above)

  • (i) The congregation was a 'landsmanshaft' for Jews from the city of Kraków, Galicia, which was in the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918, and thereafter in Poland.

  • (ii) In the listings of the congregation by V. D. Lipman in his Social History of the Jews in England 1850-1950 (see "Affiliation" below), the congregation appeared without a street number. Fieldgate Street (about one-fifth of a mile long), in London's East End, lies to the south of Whitechapel Road and forks off east from Whitechapel Road to New Road. The eastern half of the street was previously known as Charlotte Street

  • (iii) Survey of London website - History of 101 Greenfield Road. Greenfield Road (formerly Greenfield Street) (some 700 feet long) runs south from Fieldgate Street to Commercial Road (about half-way between Aldgate East Underground Station and New Road) and is parallel to Settles Street (to the east) and Plumber's Row (to the west).

  • (iv) Based upon listing by V. D. Lipman as one of 21 congregations who together formed the Federation of Minor Synagogues in November 1887.

  • (viii) Listed in G. Alderman's The Federation of Synagogues, 1887-1987, p.20, published 1987.

  • (ix) The London Borough of Tower Hamlets, an Inner London Borough within the Greater London administrative area, was created on 1 April 1965 upon the merger of the Metropolitan Boroughs of Stepney, Bethnal Green and Poplar (all of which had been in the former County of London, established 1889).

  • (x) The former Registration Districts were Stepney, from 1 January 1926 until 1 January 1983, and Whitechapel, from the 1 July 1837 until 1 January 1926. Any registers would now be held by current register office.
