Notes & Sources ( returns to text above)

  • (i) Artillery Lane runs east from Bishopsgate (just to the north of Widegate Street/Middlesex Street) for about 450 feet and then turns to the south-east for a further 200 feet and then east for a further 150 feet, where it meets the junction of Crispin Street and Bell Lane, almost opposite White's Row. Originally only the first 300 feet at the western end was known as Artillery Lane, the central section was Artillery Street and the last 150 feet at the eastern end was Raven Row. The Congregation would appear to have been situated in the central or eastern section of the street (see footnote (vii) below).

  • (ii) Social History of the Jews of England by V.D. Lipman, p. 74.

  • (iii) Based upon the last entry in marriage register being in August 1945.

  • (iv) Social History of the Jews of England by V.D. Lipman, p. 74.

  • (v) Jewish Year Book 1906.

  • (vi) Jewish Year Book 1916.

  • (vii) As the Congregation's marriage registers are held by the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, the Congregation would appear to have been situated in the central or eastern section of Artillery Lane (the former Artillery Street and Raven Row). The London Borough of Tower Hamlets covers much of the traditional London East End, was created on 1 April 1965 upon the merger of the former Metropolitan Boroughs of Stepney, Bethnal Green and Poplar. These had been within the (then abolished) County of London.

  • (viii) The City section was situated in the former civil parish of St. Botolph Without Bishopsgate (abolished 1908) in the Bishopsgate Ward Without.

  • (ix) The central section of the street (the part formally known as Artillery Street) was within the historic Liberty of the Old Artillery Ground and eastern section of the street (the part formally known as Raven Row) was within the civil parish of Spitalfields. Both of these entities were constituents of the Whitechapel District from 1856 to 1900.
