Below is a list of inscriptions appearing on objects from Danzig at the Jewish Museum in New York, extracted from
Danzig 1939: Treasures of a Destroyed Community. These are the inscriptions that name individuals or groups, and, therefore, might be linkable to Research Division members' relatives more closely than only by common association with Danzig.
The Notes column contains speculations about the identities of some of the individuals, where they are not clear from the inscriptions — e.g., because the inscriptions lack surnames (note that some inscriptions predate surname adoption). A
surname index appears as the bottom of this page. Further speculations will be added as more Danzig sources are examined.
If you have further identifying information about any of these people, please contact us. Inscriptions appearing here in English are translations from Hebrew or Judeo-German from
Danzig 1939. Inscriptions in German are untranslated. In some cases, the inscriptions presented here are excerpts of the full inscriptions described in
Danzig 1939, but what has been omitted here does not relate directly to the named individuals or groups.
Many inscriptions are dated, and these dates generally appear here in the format (Hebrew/Gregorian), where the Hebrew date is given in the inscription, and the Gregorian date is calculated from it and might be imprecise (e.g., off by one day or one year), due to differences between the calendars. The Date of Creation column sometimes gives a different date, which is the estimate provided in
Danzig 1939 for the date of the creation of the object. Often, the basis for these estimates and additional information and analysis about the objects can be found in
Danzig 1939, the numbering of the objects in that book corresponding to the No. column here.
As explained in
Danzig 1939, because some of these objects were collected as Judaica by Danzig resident (though, Wloclawek native) Lesser Gieldzinski, they might not have connections to Danzigers other than him. They might not have been used actively in the community. In the future, we will indicate which objects came from Gieldzinski's collection.
You can sort by No., Type, Date of Creation, Place of Creation by clicking those column headings.
Thanks very much to the Jewish Museum for help researching this collection.No. | Type | Date of Creation | Place of Creation | Inscription | Notes |
