Esther is a Biblical name; Elka is a Yiddish name presumably derived from Esther.

'Reb' is an honorific; it does not mean rabbi.

Mordechai is a Biblical name (from the Book of Esther). Meir [MAY-EER] means 'one who brightens' or 'one who brings light'.

Her father was a Cohen, a member of the priestly clan. The first Cohen was Aaron, Moses' brother. It is a designation passed from father to son.
