Posen, on the 26th of June, 1894.

The tradesman Hermann Krutsch, residing in Posen, Judenstrasse [Jews’ street] 30 [?], Jewish religion, known to him by virtue of a police identification card, appeared before the undersigned registrar today and reported that Bertha Krutsch, nee Bein, his wife, Jewish religion, residing with him, gave birth to a male child in Posen, in his residence, on the 29th of June of the year one thousand eight hundred ninety-four at about six-thirty in the morning, and he was given the name Martin Michael.

The wife's name on this birth document is given as Bertha; on the document of four years' later, it is given as Bianka. Did she have two names, or did Bertha die and Hermann then marry her sister Bianka? (Such tales were unfortunately quite common, as in my own family).
