These are my Great Grandparents. They are buried in, Sheffield, England! That is what I know. I'm here because I want to learn more about my Jewish heritage and hopefully to obtain some documentation in case I ever decide to move to Israel. Something I haven't ruled out!

5/1/2024 1:32 AM Hello,

I am impressed by what you wrote. I see that you have received another response, but I'm afraid that I need to correct the impression that you may have been given, that some of the people mentioned were rabbis. I will provide a full translation of both sides.

First, please allow me to suggest that if you will be posting more images of tombstones, they be put into the category "translation - Tombstone", rather than "translation - Hebrew". It's a category specifically designated for gravestone translations.

Mary:

Here lies

our dear mother, Mrs. MIRIAM daughter of Reb Chaim

Her husband and her children will weep over her,

who passed away on Rosh Chodesh Shvat 5697

May her soul be bound up in the bond of life.
-----------------------------------------------------
First of all, I need to point out that 'Reb' is an honorary title, and does not mean rabbi. It's a standard word of respect.

Miriam (pronounced mir-yam) is a Biblical name; she was Moses' sister.

Chaim (pronounced cha-yim) is the Hebrew word for life. SOME men with this name have a secular name of Hyman or similar.

She passed away on 'Rosh Chodesh' of the month of Shvat. "Rosh Chodesh", literally the "head of the month", also known as the 'New Moon', marks the start of a new Hebrew month. While sometimes a two-day event, in this case it was one day only, and coincided with the first day of the month of Shvat.

The first day of Shvat in the year 5697 began at sunset on January 12th, 1937, and ended at sunset on the 13th.

Harris:

Here lies

our dear father, Reb YEHOSHUA son of Reb Shabtai

The members of his family will weep over him,

who passed away Rosh Chodesh Shvat 5703

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.
-------------------------------------------------
Again, 'Reb' is a title of respect.

Yeshoshua [yeh-hoe-shoo-ah] is Hebrew for Joshua. Shabtai [shahb-tie, or shahb-sigh in traditional Ashkenazi pronunciation] is a Biblical name that might originally have been used for a boy born on the Sabbath.

He passed away on the same day of the Hebrew calendar as Mary, 6 years later. What I wrote, above, about "Rosh Chodesh" of the month of Shvat applies here to.

In the Hebrew year 5703, this date began at sunset on January 6th, 1943, and ended at sunset on the 7th.
