“Young Zionists”, “Kadima”, “He-halutz”

“Ha-Mercaz” was the center of Zionism in our town and at its head were conspicuous figures like Lipczer, Judovski, Tsvi Kowalski (Z”L) and still alive – Mordecai Bonim.

One of the aims of the Mercaz was to achieve some influence in the library which was led by the representatives of “The Bund”, and the “Yiddishists”. At the time of the German conquest during the First World War, evening lessons in Hebrew were arranged by the Mercaz run by Yisroel Greenhaus (the brother of the Rabbanit Schuster) and Berkowski. The students were the best of the youth at that time and the core of the federation of “Young Zionists and He-Halutz” and they were also the first of our town to immigrate in the “Third Aliya”.

The federation of “Young Zionists” who, among its founders are numbered Tsvi Kowalski, was close in spirit to “Hapo'el Ha-Tza'ir” who were also among the “Third Aliya” and joined when they immigrated to Palestine. It is worth recording that the activities of the Young Zionists in town found expression not only in the field of culture. In economic matters also, during that period, when the Germans were over-running us, the Young Zionists also took the initiative and opened a cooperative food-store managed by Shmuel Cohen (the father of Hannia Cohen who lives in Kibbutz Ein Hahoresh). Young people who were members of the Young Zionists founded, under the initiative of Yeshiyahu Judovski, the youth federation “Kadima”. It was a sort of “corridor to “Young Zionists” – most of them organized themselves with “Hehalutz”, which in addition to its attention to cultural matters also concerned itself with physical training and preparedness for immigration.
