Transliterator's note
This is the necrology for the 1954 edition of the Yizkor book for Ratno, written in Yiddish and published in Buenos Aires. There was another Yizkor book for Ratno that was prepared in Israel in 1983, and that contains an additional list of martyrs, already translated, as are other portions of the edition. There is an active translation project underway for the 1983 edition. It is always a complex task to identify the surnames for generations to come to access and difficult decisions need to be made about translation methodology. In this case, the option to use regional and local spellings for the surnames was chosen (shtejn for stein, for example). This was done in order to give more familiarity with what would be encountered in researching 19th century regional records, and will almost certainly be different from the variant spellings that have evolved in the United States and elsewhere during the acculturation process of the new immigrants. |
