Of Lipa ben [son of] Yehosha Herc, born in 1891, perished el Kiddush haShem [as a martyr] in Chelm, wintertime 1942/43. The Nazi animals tortured him intensely to death; there is no pen with which to describe his pain and suffering. Kerosene was poured into his nostrils with his head held down, his nails were pulled with pincers; he was stabbed with bayonets.

He was prominent among the Chelemer Jewish population, was one of the first philanthropists in the city, helping dozens of people in need in a quiet, modest way. He took an active part in Chelemer communal life; he was chairman of the beis lekhem [bread for the needy]; linas hatzedek [care of the sick] managing committee member, moshav zakonim [home for the aged], gmiles khesed kase [interest free loan office]; vice chairman of the council of the Jewish kehile in Chelm; managing committee member of the craftsworker union; chairman of the butchers union; managing committee member of the merchants union, merchants bank and for the social insurance of the Chelemer city council in his district;

Chana bas [daughter of] Nukhum and wife of Lipa Herc, born in 1891, perished as a martyr in Chelm on November 11th, 1942. She tragically perished with her daughter, Chaya, who was born in 1922. They were undressed and naked and the vandals shot them when they stood embracing. The first victim of our Herc family was 12-year old Feigl-Leah who was violently pulled away from her father's hands and sent to Sobibor with other children where she perished in October, 1942.

Chana-Doba Sziszler-Frajnd – We grieve and mourn the dark fate of our dear sister, Chana-Doba and her dear husband, Hersh Frajnd and their two dear little sons, who the Hitler murderers annihilated before their time.

We do not know where and how they perished; we only know that they were bestially torn from us and they were pure saints along with the entire Chelemer Jewish community and the six million Jewish martyrs.

She was torn away in the blossoming age, about 28 years old – the good and gentle soul, the graceful, beautiful and sincere Mariam Sziszler, the daughter of Reb Pinkhus Tenenboum (Pinye Meir Gelcze's), well known Belzer Hasid in Chelm.

When Mariam Sziszler came to South Africa in 1934 to her husband, Hersh, she was young, beautiful and healthy. However, she immediately began to lament that she was afraid, was frightened that Africa was not for her.

On the first day that she set foot on African soil, Mariam Sziszler began to feel worse day by day – and finally became very ill, confined to her bed, which she, alas, never left.

At the last minute, when she was already wrestling with the Angel of Death, she called her husband, Hersh, to her and asked him to read something from his letters to her. He read accompanied by tears – and at that terrible moment, Mariam Sziszler fell into her eternal sleep.

She was beloved and valued in her former home city, Chelm. Mariam Sziszler possessed a noble character and good heart. Her dark fate wanted her to come here to die.

Always remember her good and holy soul. May her memory be blessed!

Let this be a matseyve [headstone] for our father Shimkha Ceber, of blessed memory, who died on the third day of Khol HaMo'ed Sukkos [the intervening days of the Feast of Tabernacles] in Chelm, 1932.

We also remember our mother, Chava Ceber, daughter, Bluma, sons, Yitzhak and Haim, and daughter, Shlomoh Ceber, wife Alta and children, Feygele and Moshele “Siedlec,” Yehoshua and Feyga Rikhtszrejber and sons, Yitzhak and Haim and daughter, Leah; Shlomoh and Chana Samet; Yehoshua and Keyla Gorn and children, Haim, Yakov Dovid and Zisele.

They all perished at the hands of the Nazi murderers. We tell and teach our children that our fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers were annihilated only because they were Jews.

In Eternal Memory

My childhood friend, Yankl Korb, who fell as a victim of the Austrians in 1915.

There was a strong hunger in Chelm during the German occupation during the First World War. It was eight days before Purim. The occupation regime issued a decree that men and women should report for work and that they would be paid several krone a day.

The meeting point was near the postal administrative office. I, and many other Jews, reported for work. We were all led to an open place far outside the city, ordered to take apart the wires from the Russian positions.

When I came home, I met my friend, Yankl Korb, who told me that he would also go to work. He was waiting for me the next morning at dawn.

Again we were all taken to work. We were given the most difficult work, too difficult. The Austrian officers insulted us with the words: Dirty Jews, lazy Jews.

I parted from him late in the dark night, not knowing where he went. He was found dead eight days later.

Died on the 18th of Sivan, 5713, the 1st of June 1953, in Johannesburg, South Africa

It is very painful to write and simply unbelievable that cruel, merciless death tore you away. You were a bright personality, a teacher of the Jewish people, giving away your best years for the Jewish school, on behalf of the Jewish child, and to raising a healthy, young Jewish generation, inculcating the ideals of the people and their culture in them. You carried the load of school work from the first step with a great deal of idealism and saintliness. You worked with great success and appreciation between the two World Wars – in various schools, also in Melnica (Galicia), Rozyszcze (Wolyn) and 10 years in Chelm.

You, dear and unforgettable Nekha, endured all seven divisions of gehinim [hell] of the Hitlerist inquisition, losing your husband, Berl Alslrod in the Ninth Fort in Kovno, and your children, Devorah and Josele – and your old mother, Rayza – who perished in Auschwitz. In April, 1944, you lost your youngest sister, Tayba.

These torture racks of ghetto and concentration camp life in tragic circumstances devoured and gnawed away your health. Yet, ignoring your weak health, you did not want to disrupt your school work in the Lintz-Bindermichel refugee camp [in Austria] and in the Johannesburg Jewish School.

However, it was as if a ruthless and brutal death lay in wait, conquered you and cut short your ambition and striving for creative educational work.

Your holy, holiest memory is unforgettable for us!

This year, on November 5th, Aizik Najman, of blessed memory died suddenly in Israel in the bloom of his years.

The deceased Najman was born in Wlodawa (Poland) and received a religious-traditional upbringing and also studied in famous yeshivus. He married Hinda Monczarsz of Chelm, daughter of Yakov and Ruchl, and emigrated to Israel with his wife, although times were hard in the country then. He was active in Mizrakhi [religious Zionist] circles in Israel as he had been in the same movement in his birthplace of Wlodawa. He was religious and, at the same time,

When the Hitlerist troops occupied Poland, the deceased's heart was full of protest against the people of the country who remained indifferent to our tragedy and did not try to save the suffering Jews.

After the liberation, when the calamity was revealed as much greater than had been imagined, Aizik Najman, of blessed memory, suffered greatly from it and on November 5th of this year, he breathed out his Jewish soul.

Reb Shlomoh Borukh Danciker of Rajwic, half of whose beard and a piece of his cheek was cut off in 1920 by Halertchikes[2] (as a joke), perished at the hands of the Hitler murderers in Dubienko with many other Jews, who were forced to dance around a fire of burning religious books and Torahs, which the Hitler animals had lit. Danciker died from great pain and heartache that broke the heart of the pious Jew.

I remember and will never forget my father, Menakhem Mendl, of blessed memory, who died on the 20th of Tevet 5683, 1908[3] His grave was desecrated by the Nazi bandits.

In 1920 I said good-bye to my family. To my question: “Why are you crying, Mama, I am going to Eretz-Yisroel.” She said: “You will say Kaddish [memorial prayer for the dead] for me.”

I consoled her that she would live to see Moshiakh [the Messiah].

In 1939-1945, the Fascist vandals did not exclude my entire family from their murderous orgy. I remained the only one to recite Kaddish for my mother, Tartsa Gotlib, my annihilated brothers, sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, male and female cousins and so on.

I will not forget that at the hands of Fascism, that carried on a war, a third of the Jewish population perished. I sanctify the words when I say Kaddish: fight Fascism in all its forms, fight the inciters of war, who call for a new genocide.

Josef Alter, may he rest in peace

Josef Alter, the youngest and most cheerful young man, was ruthlessly torn away in his prime; he died at nearly 20 years of age. Fate wished that he be carried away from his home city of Chelm to South Africa, later to Eretz-Yisroel, and again to South Africa, where he became ill. His mother, Rywka, rushed to America when it was necessary, wanting to save him. However, this was not successful. He died in New York.

All of my dearest and closest, who tragically perished.

I shudder when I think of my mother, whom I see in my imagination.

My brother Berish, the oldest, the first in the family, was the first victim with his dear son, Nota.

My sister Gitele was so good hearted and never forgot the poor, the hungry. The Hitler murderers annihilated her and both of her children.

My dear sister-in-law Feygele was like a sister to me and to my family; everyone loved her. She always wanted to see the good in others. She was among the first victims.

My sister Surale was always suffering from need, never had enough bread. Her house was always clean. Her soul was bright. It hurts me that my dear sister perished so tragically with her children in Lublin.

My family and I will never forget you.

May your memory be blessed.
