The following list of 440 Jews who perished in the Holocaust was taken from a book, "Es ist nicht leicht, darüber zu sprechen" Der November-Pogrom 1938 im Kreis Borken, ("It is not easy to talk about it" the November 1938 pogrom in Borken county). Borken is located north of the Ruhr in western Germany. The book was published by the county, and, although it focuses on events which took place in area towns in 1938, it includes lists of persons who died in the Holocaust in later years. Not all the persons listed were deported directly from Borken. Some had moved to other parts of Germany while others even left Germany but were deported from countries such as the Netherlands. So long as they had resided in Borken they were included. A few persons committed suicide rather than be deported and they can be identified by a local place of death. Persons who died of natural causes in the Nazi period were not included. The dates of death for those who who died in camps such as Theresienstadt are probably correct but the dates of death in camps such as Sobibor probably reflect the date of arrival of a transport, rather than an actual date of death.
The headings are: Family name; maiden name; given name; date of birth; place of birth; date of death; and place of death. The book from which this list was compiled includes profession and marital status, but this was not computerized.
