In Memory of the Fallen

Captain Arye Holander

Arye Holander was born in Tel Aviv on 11/20/1945 to Leah (z”l) and Dov Holander (may he live long). As a member of “HaShomer HaTzair,” when the time came for his enlistment in the IDF, he hesitated whether he should join the [infantry] Nakha”l Brigade [stands for Fighting Pioneering Youth]. In the end, he decided to join the Armored Corps. He advanced in the corps and attained the rank of an officer. Despite his wish to establish an agricultural farm in a Moshav, in a border area, he gave up on his private plans, continued to serve in the standing army, and served in a fighting unit of the Armored Corps.

During the Six Days War, on 26 Iyar 5,726 (6/5/1967), he attacked the Rafah compound with a tank company for which he was a deputy commander. Exposed on the tank's turret, he was killed by a direct hit at Rafah junction. Captain Holander was one of the first fallen soldiers in the Six Days War. His life was cut short at the age of 21, at the beginning of his road.

We will remember him always - tall and smiling. His good-hearted nature was reflected in his dark eyes.

May his memory be blessed.

Holander Shimon
Born 7/11/1913 Died 5/13/1948, 3 Iyar 5,708

Shimon Holander made Aliyah as a pioneer in 1938. He joined a nucleus of [“Bnei Akiva” youth movement] who settled in Kfar Etzion. There, he married Yehudit, nee Shmeterling, from Brzezany. During the War of Independence, he took an active role in defending the kibbutz, where he was killed.

May his memory be blessed.

Tenenbaum Shmuel

Shmuel Tenenbaum, nicknamed "Shmulik" by his friends at the “Bnei Akiva” branch in Brzezany, was already industrious in work and Torah from early childhood. He was sharp and diligent in his studies. Despite the heavy burden imposed on him at a young age to support his mother and brother, did not abandon the Zionist idea and public Zionist activity. He dedicated all his vigor to the branch of “Bnei Akiva” in Brzezany, where he was one of the leaders. His work was also associated with Zionism, as he served as a teacher at the “HaMizrakhi” school in the city, and had also given private lessons in Hebrew. He did not associate his desire to make Aliyah with language studies. He used to say that “in Eretz Israel, there is a need for Hebrew workers,” and “everybody is speaking Hebrew there.” He, therefore, looked for a profession he could work after making Aliyah. For that purpose, he dedicated himself to bee-keeping.

After making Aliyah in the early 1930s, he joined Kibbutz Kfar Etzion, where he established a family. He was killed while defending the kibbutz in the War of Independence, on 5/15/1948, 3 Iyar 5,708.

May his memory be blessed.

Heavy is the fate of parents who lose a son, but an indescribable calamity is to lose two sons on the same day. Such a cruel fate hit Leah and Meir Sapir. They lost Dan and his brother Yosi on the same day in the Yom Kippur War.

Lieutenant Colonel Dan Sapir

The older son, Dan Sapir, was born on 12 Tevet 5,699 (1/3/1939). He fell in the Sinai's blocking battle in the Yom Kippur War on 12 Tishrei 5,734 (10/8/1973) while serving in the senior position of Lieutenant Colonel.

The paratrooper – Yoel Meir

Yoel, son of Moshe Meir from Narajow, enlisted in the Red Army in 1941 during the Soviet rule in Galitsia. After completing a paratrooper course, he took an active role in the war against the Nazis on various fronts. In his last letter to his brother in Israel in 1944, he wrote that he was in a faraway country. Since then, all traces of him were lost.

He was a good-looking and good-hearted person who fought bravely against the Nazis. His motto was “Blood for Death.”

May his memory be blessed.
