On the Occasion
of the Presentation of the Book

By Eliyahu (Adyk) Silberman

Translated by Rena Berkowicz Borow

With gratitude in our hearts and Shehecheyanu on our lips, we present to the people of Zborow, the book that commemorates our town, the Yizkor Book of Zborow.

Almost 30 years have passed since the board of the Zborow society resolved to publish a memorial book of our town compiled by R' Binyamin, our distinguished landsman. The call went out to all our fellow townspeople, but at the time, it was like a lone voice in the desert. Our call went unanswered, and aside from a small trove of memories received from Josef Gershon Labiner in New York, our outreach went unheeded.

Over time, there were repeated attempts to revive the idea of creating a memorial book of our town. Discussions were held, resolutions were passed, but a lack of awareness of the urgency of the mission stood in the way.

The turning point came at the end of Simchat Torah (October 22, 1970) at a meeting of the Zborow society, in the Haifa area, where, for the first time, actual guidelines were laid out to raise funds for the project and raise responsiveness with respect to collecting and editing content.

As the effort began to take shape, it became clear to the board and the work group how difficult the task they took upon themselves was. There were naysayers who denigrated the entire concept: why dig up the past? Who will write the story? etc. Even those in favor of a Yizkor Book were slow in supplying material from their own memories. We reached out to our fellow townspeople in writing and in person, pleading with them to share the physical and emotional horrors they endured during the Holocaust, to report on their suffering and deprivation. We offered to come to them and record their stories. We also reached out to those who were lucky enough to be spared the worst, to tell of their lives before the years of terror–to share memories and experiences of day-to-day life in Zborow–in order to preserve and perpetuate its essence for coming generations.

[Page 477]

Sadly, we got very few responses when we began our effort. We could not even get people to give us the names of loved ones who were murdered, and it was only thanks the work of Mr. Kronisch, of blessed memory, a survivor from Zborow, who researched and provided us the a list the of names we published in the book.

In spite of all the hardships, the book has come to light and we can allow ourselves to state that it is no less compelling in form or content than other books by groups of more means than ours, or of towns of more renown. This book owes its achievement to the dedication of those who would not give up and worked tirelessly to bring it to realization as well as to those who heeded our call and gave with an open hand and heart.

To all who participated, our thanks. May you go from strength to strength.
