Preface

During the Great Holocaust in the tragic years 1941-3, in which the beastly Nazis annihilated 6 million Jewish martyrs, also the Jews of Maytchet met their bitter end, on the first to third days of Av 5702 (1942).

The first day of Av was proclaimed to be the annual “Yahrzeit” of our dear martyrs, when the few survivors together with earlier pioneers gather in Israel to honor the memory of our dear ones.

After a long period of preparation and organizational work, we are publishing this Yizkor Book to honour the memory of the Jewish community of Maytchet and environs and their dear martyrs. We did our best to collect all possible material in notes and pictures, in order to bring light in these holy pages on the Jewish life which flowed in our town for many generations. It is our aim that this Yizkor Book shall serve as a worthy memorial candle for the blessed souls of the dear Jews, people of Torah and Tradition, Zionist and public leaders, social fighters and many plain people, righteous and merciful.

It is a great privilege to use this book for writing down for the coming generations the names and deeds of our dear ones. In their honor we compiled material about geography, history, society and culture, family notes and lists of our martyrs. We hope Zionists and public leaders, social fighters and many plain people, that the coming generations will read these pages and learn about their forefathers, the martyrs who were tortured and died for being Jews, and who in their death granted us our lives.

On this occasion we express our sincere thanks to all those who assisted us in our holy task, and especially to the editor, Mr. Ben-Zion H. Ayalon, who had edited many memorial books before, and who gave his utmost dedication to prepare and publish this worthy book.
