Reb Elimelech, son of Rabbi Zvi VAKS,
olav hasholem [may he rest in peace]
(born 1841, died 1914).

Reb Elimelech VAKS was one of the most respected householders among the Grayeve pioneers, one of the best Talmudic scholars in the Mir Yeshiva, a well known haberdashery businessman and active for the public good. Married the noble woman Ms. Beyle Brayne, daughter of Reb Yisroel MINTZ, olav hasholem.
For years he served as a gabay [a lay person who volunteers to perform various duties in connection with Torah readings at religious services] in Grayeve and dedicated his entire life to the public good. He did not use his great talents to amass possessions, but helped create in Grayeve such public institutions as the new bathhouse, the hospitality society, the new bes-medresh, community butcher shops etc.
His home was always a gathering place for scholars, an open door to the needy, to immigrants from all over the world, to whom he always gave good advice and help. Hundreds of immigrants who were arrested for illegally crossing the border were freed thanks to him. Never was it too difficult for him to carry out the mitsvah [commandment] of freeing captives. The doors of all government offices were open for him.
Thus he lived a fine life and reserved a place in the world to come, in which he believed strongly.
We grieve for those who are gone and not forgotten. May his soul be bound up in the bundle of the living.

One of the finest families with traditional lineage – son-in-law and daughter of Reb Elimelech VAKS – the great rabbi and preacher Rabbi Yosef ZAYDENBERG, olev-hasholem; his noble wife Ms. Tsipora; their children: 1) Borech Moyshe, 2) Brayne, 3) Sheyne Itke, 4) Elimelech and, 5) name unknown. All killed as martyrs in the gas chambers of Hitler, may his name be erased.

Reb Motl Leyb and Golde MLAVSKY

Reb Motl Leyb MLAVSKY was one of the most respected householders in Grayeve. He was known as a scholar and very pious man and became beloved through his good deeds. As a young man he was the manager of POKROYSKY's suspenders factory up to 1890, when the factory was taken over by HEPNER. Later, Reb Motl Leyb MLAVSKY became a lumber contractor in the Warsaw citadel and became known as a merchant and charitable person. Reb Motl Leyb MLAVSKY was born in 1846 and was murdered at the hands of the Nazi murderers in 1943.
