Former Residents of Akkerman
and Region in Israel
by The Editorial Board
Translated by Yocheved Klausner
As is told in one of the chapters of this book, hundreds of years ago there were already roads from Akkerman to Eretz Israel, but these roads were taken only by very few and by groups of Crusaders. The road to Eretz Israel with the purpose of living there and building one's future there opened in 1920, when the first pioneers from Akkerman and surroundings made Aliya - their story is told in this book. Many roads led to Eretz Israel since then: through the home, the Hebrew HighSchool, the youth movement, the pioneer [Halutz] movement, all the Zionist Organizations. All these pointed the way.
Even when the Aliya gates were locked with seven locks, the young Zionists found ways to come to Eretz Israel. These were illegal ways, but in the eyes of the youth there was nothing more legal than the illegal Aliya. According to a careful estimate, hundreds of people from Akkerman and the region made Aliya starting from 1920. The Second World War put an end to the hopes of many of our townspeople to reach the shore of the homeland; but it remained the only aim for so many of the Holocaust survivors who, even during their most terrible hours continued to aspire, to dream and to think of the homeland. Many of them did succeed to reach that safe shore.
In many settlements in Eretz Israel one can meet former residents of Akkerman and surrounding towns. Many of them were elderly when they arrived, but all joined the task of building our homeland, each in his profession and according to his means. We intended to bring here a full list of the former residents of Akkerman and the region in Israel, and we hope we will be forgiven by those whose names were not included.
