6/26/2012 5:16 AM Happy New Year (Jewish New Year) for Rosh HaShanah
12/17/2024 7:11 AM I just noticed this old posting of yours and saw that there is more to be understood than just Happy New year, if I may.
I would imagine that this is a photo post card. was it addressed to a female?
I ask because it says arched across the top
לשנה טובה תכתבי
May you be written (in the book in heaven) for a good year. Grammatically it is worded as one would address a a female not a male.
In the lower left hand corner it says the year 5665 (since the world was created)
The Jewish calendar begins in the month of Tishrei , the first day being the holiday of Rosh Hashanah.
Rosh Hashanah 5665 was on September 10, 1904.
I would imagine that your grandfather had this photo taken and printed sometime in August 1904.

Traditionally our actions of the previous year are assessed by God on Rosh Hashanah. Are we written in the book for the Mitzvos we did or God forbid the sins

Historically I think Kodak only began offering photo Post cards in 1902. So this was still a relatively new thing. for a Jewish immigrant to do.

it is a beautiful photo and he obviously was a handsome young man. Although having a picture taken was probably not the casual fun thing we take for granted today. Notice the tense look on his face. probably was nervous
