Book Launch and Discussion
Thursday 23 February 2017, 18h30 for 19h00
The Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre invite you to join us in conversation with Solly Kaplinski at the launch of his book:
*A World of Pains: A Redemptive Parable?*
by Solly Kaplinski
The terrible events which took place in Lithuania during the Holocaust are
the backdrop for this fictionalised story. Kaplinski has drawn on his own
family history and historical research to build a psychological thriller
around his central protagonist who is a highly respected American lawyer.
Drawing on his experiences as an educator and psychologist and grappling
with the way in which trauma affects all involved in it, Kaplinski examines
the complexity of memory and how the past remains with us even if only in
the darkest recesses of the mind.
*Solly Kaplinski* was formerly Headmaster of Herzlia School in Cape Town,
and thereafter the head of Jewish Day-Schools in Canada. He subsequently
worked at Yad Vashem for 6 years and since 2006 has been with the American
Jewish Joint Distribution Committee.
Solly's parents, Izak and Sima, were Bielski partisans. His family history
inspired the writing of this novella, as well as an anthology of poetry.
He lives in Israel with his wife, three daughters, and nine grandchildren.
