Notes & Sources

( returns to text above)

  • (i) Reserved.

  • (ii) The congregation appeared under this name at all times when listed the Jewish Year Book.

  • (iii) 5 Chelverton Road was the address listed in Jewish Year Books from 1971. However, the registration of the congregation under the Places of Worship Registration Act 1855 (see below) gave the address as 3/5 Chelverton Road.

  • (iv) See photograph taken in 2008.

  • (v) There are reports that the congregation appointed its first minister in 1954 although it did not become affiliated to the United Synagogue until 1956 and was first listed in the Jewish Year Book 1958.

  • (vi) The congregation was last listed in the Jewish Year Book 1984.

  • (vii) The United Synagogue 1870-1970 by Aubrey Newman (1977), p. 222. The congregation was at all times listed in Jewish Year Books as an affiliated synagogue.

  • (viii) to (x) Reserved.

  • (xi) According to Michael Jolles's Encyclopaedia of British Jewish Cantors, Chazanim, etc, Rev. Cooper served the congregation from 1954 until about 1980. However, he is only listed as reader of the congregation in the Jewish Year Book 1969 and from 1973 through 1976. To view a short profile of Rev. Cooper - hold the cursor over his name.

  • (xii) Based upon Rev. A. Robin's listing as reader of the congregation in Jewish Year Books 1970 through 1972.

  • (xiii) to (xv)

  • (xvi) All the data as listed here has been extracted from Jewish Year Books. There were no Jewish Year Book listings of officers (other than secretary) subsequent to 1956. Where a person is first listed in a year book as holding a particular office, it has been assumed that his term of office commenced in the year of publication of the relevant year book (which was generally towards the end of the year prior to year appearing the the title of the year book) and that he continued in office until the commencement of office of his successor (e.g. if he is listed in Jewish Year Books 1958 through 1970, it is assumed that he commenced office in 1957 and continued in office until 1970). However, it should be noted that this is only an assumption and accordingly his actual years of office may differ slightly from those shown here.

  • (xvii) Listed as hon. secretary in Jewish Year Books 1979, 1980 and 1983.

  • (xx) The London Borough of Wandworth, an Inner London Borough, was created on 1 April 1965 upon the merger of the former metropolitan borough of Battersea with most of the former metropolitan borough of Wandsworth (excluding the Clapham and Streatham areas, which went to the London Borough of Lambeth). All areas had been within the former County of London.
