Leeds Old Central Synagogue (or Leeds Old Central Hebrew Congregation)
(also initially known as the Central Synagogue and

Central Synagogue and Beth Hamedrash)

Address:

Victoria Place, Leeds, from 1929 (although moved to Newton Park, Chapeltown Road shortly prior to closing).

Former Addresses:

Hope Street, Leeds.

Subsequently, Templar Street - from (official opening) 4 September 1898 until 1907 (when building was abandoned for financial reasons).

Following break services resumed in about 1908, until 1929, at  20a St Albans Street.  (This was previously the home of Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue and the Herzl Moser Zionist Synagogue)

Founded:

1887, as the Old and New Mariempoler Synagogue or Mariampolar Synagogue (named after the town in southern Lithuania, Mariampole, from where most of its original congregants originated.)

Closure:

Closed 1958 - merged into Beth Hamidrash Hagadol Synagogue

Ritual:

Ashkenazi Orthodox

1887 - 120 seatholders (Board of Deputies Returns)

1890 - 120 seatholders (Board of Deputies Returns)

1895 - 100 seatholders (Jewish Year Book 1896)

1900 - 200 seatholders (Board of Deputies Returns)

1950 - 100 seatholders (Jewish Year Book 1951)
