Chapeltown Hebrew Congregation - also known as Chapeltown United Synagogue

Address:

58 & 60 Francis Street, Chapeltown Road, Leeds (from 1913 or, possibly, from after First World War), previously in Regent Street (from about 1902).

Founded:

1888, as the Lowkever Synagogue (named after the town in western Lithuania, Loikeve - now Laukuva, from where most of its original congregants originated.)

Closure:

Closed in about 1962.

Ritual:

Ashkenazi Orthodox

Affiliations:

In 1897, joined the Amalgamation of Synagogues
In about 1949, became a constituent synagogue of the United Hebrew Congregation.

Membership Data:

1938 - 235 members (The Jewish Year Book 1939)
