Quotes from the Church Times. With disappearance of School Boards such an absurdity as that of the Wombwell Board some years ago will no longer be possible.
Board appointed as Assistant-Master at Barnsley School a Mr Moses Sanger, a Jew. When required to read school prayers he refused, and also absented himself on Jewish New Year. The Board ordered him to conform to its rules or resign. The Church Times said this was ridiculous.
The Board had been tolerant in appointing a Jew to give religious instruction to children of Christian parents. The Jew had a conscience and so must not do certain things. The Board’s tolerance broke down. ‘… in the matter of the appointment the claims of the teacher ought to have been placed first, and a teacher should have been given them who believed what he had to teach them’.
If they oust him for his refusal to violate the religious scruples which they might have supposed him to feel when they appointed him they will justly incur the charge of religious persecution; ’if they leave him alone their ridiculous conduct in appointing him will be strongly emphasised’.
