JCR-UK is a genealogical and historical website covering all Jewish communities and
congregations throughout the British Isles and Gibraltar, both past and present.

Town of Abergavenny

Abergavenny (in Welsh: Y Fenni), a market town at the confluence of the river Usk and its Gavenny tributary in southeast Wales, has a population of about 10,000. It lies about 15 miles west of Monmouth and some six miles from the border with England.

Abergavenny was a municipal borough in the county of Monmouthshire. From 1974 until 1996, it was within the district (later borough) of Monmouth in the newly-formed county of Gwent. In 1996, It became part of the reconstituted county of Monmouthshire, a unitary authority covering sixty percent of the area of the historic county (remaining within the ceremonial, or preserved, county of Gwent).

The Jewish Community

There were a number of Jewish residents of Abergavenny in the mid-nineteenth century, although there is no knowledge of an organised Jewish congregation or Jewish cemetery.
