Press Report relating to the
Hull Jewish Community

Jewish Chronicle, 1 September 1916

Hull. Last Sabbath, Rabbi J. D. Lurie delivered his farewell address at the Synagogue of the Old Hebrew Congregation, prior to his departure to Glasgow to take up his duties as Rabbi of the Machzike Hadass Synagogue in that city. Rabbi Lurie arrived in Hull nine years ago from Bialostok, Russia, owing to the disturbance there at that period. During his stay in Hull he won the esteem of all classes of the community. He held classes for adults in all branches of Biblical and Talmudical knowledge. His work among Jewish transmigrants, who passed through Hull previous to the war, was of especial benefit to them, notably in his supervision of the Kosher Kitchen at the railway station. Mrs. Lurie took an active part in this work, especially among the women and children. Rabbi Lurie preached his valedictory sermon at the Central Synagogue, Cogan Street, on Sunday. After the service, the Wardens (Messrs. J. Marks and M. Sugarman) expressed the feelings of the Congregation in wishing the Rabbi success in his new sphere of work.
