Proposed Chiswick Synagogue - Growing Community
The number of Jewish residents in Chiswick has greatly increased in recent years, and there are now approximately 300 Jewish families
residing in the locality. The nearest synagogue is about four miles distant and the need for a local place of worship has become obvious.
A meeting will be convened at the Chiswick Town Hall, in the near future, but all who are interested in the formation of a synagogue are
asked to communicate with Mr. H. Silverman, 44 Watchfield, Sutton Court Road, W.4 (phone Chiswick 5922), so that they may be kept informed of future developments.

Independence Claimed
SIR, - With reference to the report of the London Board of Jewish Religious Education, in your issue of February 6, concerning the proposed centralisation
of Hebrew Classes to Hammersmith, we would state, with
great respect to Mr. Levin, that to say "that the Chiswick Congregation are demurring" is a complete understatement.
The attitude of our congregation in this matter was made quite clear to the London Board in
a letter addressed to the Chairman. We are happy to be able to announce that after only four years' existence our membership has grown
from 30 to 108, and this figure is steadily increasing.
With the support of the United Synagogue, the congregation has just purchased its own property, for which planning permission has been obtained.
We have also been fortunate in acquiring the services of Mr. I. Levinson to take charge of our classes.
This points to a growing community, which is active and energetic under the spiritual leadership of the Rev. D. Wolfson
and despite the fact that the London Board adamantly refused to take over our classes in the past, we are determined to provide from our own resources,
and under our own roof, the best Jewish religious education that it is possible to obtain.

After being in existence for only 23 years, Chiswick and District Affiliated Synagogue has closed owing to falling membership and
"lack of interest." Mr Nathan Rubin, secretary of the United Synagogue, told me it was planned to sell the site in
Barrowgate Road and to accommodate the members at Hammersmith Synagogue.
Mr. Rubin said that Chiswick's honorary officers had themselves approached him about the closure. In 1956 there were 70 male members but the number had declined
to 32 and the closure of the synagogue had been agreed upon.
