45 Ashburton Road, Addiscombe, Croydon, consecrated by Rabbi Kopul Rosen in February 1948.(iv) Festivals services were held at Clyde Hall, Clyde Road, Addiscombe.

When Formed:

The origins of the congregation were in about July 1947(v) when a number of members of Croydon & District Synagogue living in and around Addiscombe began arranging separate services for the High Holidays.

Status:

Closed in 1954 when the congregation reunited with Croydon & District Synagogue.

Mr. M. Lederman, President of the Federation of Synagogues, speaking at a reception for the combined congregations, "stressed the need for unity within the Orthodox community whatever the degree of observance. For the sake of future generations it was essential that Orthodox bodies present a united front against weakening tendencies".(viii)

Addiscombe, which is a couple of miles east of the centre of Croydon, in South London (about 15 miles south of Charing Cross), is in the London Borough of Croydon, an Outer London Borough created on 1 April 1965, within the administrative area of Greater London.

Prior to 1965, Addiscombe was in the former County Borough of Croydon (established 1889), geographically within the County of Surrey.

  • (xxii) Wardens for this congregation were not listed in Jewish Year Books.

  • (xxiii) Based upon the election of Mr. R. Ralph as warden at the 1951 AGM.

  • (xxiv) Based upon the election of Messrs. R. Ralph and M. Weinrob as wardens at the 1952 AGM.

  • (xxv) Based upon the election of Mr. R. Ralph as warden at the 1953 AGM.

  • (xxvi) Based upon R. Ralph's listing as treasurer of the congregation in Jewish Year Books 1948 through 1951.

  • (xxvii) Based upon the election of Mr. Urwand as treasurer at the 1951 AGM. He is also listed as treasurer in Jewish Year Books from 1952.

  • (xxviii) Based upon the election of Mr. Urwand and Mr. Bliss as joint treasurers at the 1952 AGM. Mr. Bliss is not listed in any Jewish Year Book.
