The town of Sale is about 6 miles southeast of Manchester City Centre and forms the central eastern part of the metropolitan borough of Trafford. Trafford is in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester (although the latter no longer has any administrative powers).

Until its incorporation into Trafford in 1974, Sale was in the county of Cheshire, and had the status of  a municipal borough from 1935, and was previously an urban district from 1894.
