JCR-UK is a genealogical and historical website covering all Jewish communities and Metropolitan Borough of Kirklees Kirklees is a metropolitan borough in the metropolitan county of West Yorkshire in the North of England. It was formed in 1974 from the merger of the county boroughs of Huddersfield and Dewsbury with a number of smaller local authorities, all of which had been part of the West Riding of Yorkshire. In 1986, Kirklees became a unitary authority when West Yorkshire lost its administrative status and became purely a ceremonial county. Huddersfield (population about 145,000) had been a county borough since 1889, Dewsbury (population about 60,000) since 1913. The Kirklees Jewish Community Both Huddersfield and Dewsbury had small Jewish communities, first established in the nineteenth or early twentieth centuries.
