Hastings & Bexhill Jewish Groups

JCR-UK is a genealogical and historical website covering all Jewish communities and
congregations throughout the British Isles and Gibraltar, both past and present.
NOTE: We are not the official website of for either of the groups below.

The following groups have been established in Hastings or Bexhill-on-Sea in the late twentieth or twenty-first centuries (and there was also a Bexhill and District Jewish Friends group in existence from at least 2006 until at least 2015(i)). There were also two earlier short-lived orthodox congregations in Hastings and St. Leonards-on-Sea, at different time (see Hastings and St Leonards Hebrew Congregations). Meetings generally held in Bexhill-on-Sea, in private homes.(ii)

Date Founded:

About 1974(iii)

Current Status:

Now believed defunct, from at least 2018, based upon its charitable status (see below), although it may still be continuing on an informal basis.

Reform oriented

Affiliation:

Unaffiliated.

Although believed defunct, it is still listed under Hastings and District Jewish Society on the Jewish Small Communities Network website.

1990 - 36 members (comprising 24 households, 4 individual male and 8 individual female members)

1996 - 44 members (comprising 17 households, 6 individual male and 21 individual female members)

2010 & 2016- listed as having under 50 members (by household)

Former Charitable Status:

The society was a registered charity (no. 273806), registered on 28 July 1977, the governing document having been the society's constitution adopted September 1974. It was removed from the register on 31 May 2018 on the grounds that it had "Ceased to exist".(vi)

Cemetery Information:

The Hastings Cemetery, 234 The Ridge, Hastings, East Sussex TN34 2AE includes a Jewish section (block 'NA'), opened in 1975, which contains approximately 25 graves.(vii)

Second Group Data

Name:

Hastings Jewish Community

Address:

No synagogue or formal infrastructure, it has met in and around Hastings for social gatherings such as a communal Seder and parties on Chanukah and Purim.(xxi)

Date Founded:

Formally established in 2024, but informally formed in 1923 in the wake of 7 October atrocities.(xxi)

Current Status:

Active.

Ritual & Affiliation:

Non-denominational and unaffiliated

Ministers:

None

Legal Status:

On 17 June 2024, Hastings Jewish Community Limited, was incorporated as a registered (non-profit) company (company no. 15784234), a private company limited by guarantee without a share capital.(xxii)

Membership:

Over 40 households and 70 members.(xxiii)
