129 Hill Street (previously known as 29 Garnet Street and 127 Hill Street), Garnethill, Glasgow G3 6UG
(built 1879 - Glasgow's first purpose-built synagogue).

The synagogue is a Scottish Category A Listed Building (number LB33040), first designated Category B on 27 November 1979 and upgraded in 2004. View description on Historic Environment Scotland website.

Current Status:

Active - the only remaining synagogue in Glasgow's City Centre.

Services held on the Sabbath morning and Festival.

Since 1986, the Synagogue has also been the home of the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre (http://www.sjac.org.uk)

1879

Prior till then, commencing from 1823, the community, generally referred to as Glasgow Hebrew Congregation, prayed at a number of successive premises  - see Glasgow's Early Synagogues.

Ashkenazi Orthodox

Unions and Affiliations:

From 1886/7 until 1898, the Garnethill Synagogue was the main synagogue in a synagogue union with Main Street Synagogue (in Glasgow's Gorbals), pursuant to which latter became the South Side Branch of the union.

From 1896 until 1906, Garnethill Synagogue was the leading synagogue in United Synagogue of Glasgow.
