JCR-UK is a genealogical
and historical website covering all Jewish communities and congregations
throughout the British Isles and Gibraltar, both past and present.
NOTE: We are not the official website of this congregation,
the address of which is given below.
Background
In the midst of World War II, with the demise of Kehilla life all over Europe
and the virtual extinction of all organised Torah learning,
Rev. Dovid Dryan, the reader and teacher of Gateshead Hebrew
Congregation and the founder of Gateshead Yeshiva, had an idea -
to establish a Kolel, an institution of ordained rabbis
engaged in Talmudic studies, in order that such rabbis would ultimately become
authorities on Halacha.
There were a number of eminent rabbis in Britain who were fortunate to have escape the Nazi-controlled Europe and
in September 1941 Rev. Dryan took the initiative and sent letters to twenty prominent
rabbis in England inviting
them to join him in Gateshead in making his latest idea become a reality.
Rabbi Eliyahu Eliezer Dessler was the only
rabbi who accepted Rev. Dryan's invitation, and in November 1941
the Gateshead Kolel, the first of its type in Britain, opened
its doors.
