Jewish Chronicle, 14 June 1901 page 25 70th birthday of Norman Isaac Berlin. A teacher for 47 years. Born Hamburg 14 June 1832. Started teaching there at age 13. In 1854 came to London and joined Henry Solomon's 'Academy' at Edmonton. 18 months there then went to R.I. Cohen's boarding school at Dover. Was there for one year then back to Edmonton (and to other places thereafter). He died - Jewish Chronicle 4 April 1902 p. 19.

Jewish Chronicle, 20 June 1902 page 6 'Dover Hebrew Congregation. - Mr. J.S. Spero, of Maison Dieu Road, writes to us to complain that there is no service in the synagogue on Friday evenings and often Minyan on Sabbath mornings, and that the reasonable wishes of the members are ignored, their just demands set aside and all suggestions simply laughed at. Mr. Spero is of opinion, that unless the Religious Union, the Federation, or Dr. Adler will take the matter in hand, some of the Dover Jews will be known as such by name only, but not by observation'.

Jewish Chronicle, 25 May 1906 page 31 Marble slab erected in vestibule of Dover synagogue to memory of late Mrs Bertha Lewis by her sister Madame Therese Otterbourg. Slab is next to one in memory of her father R.I. Cohen. The family will keep up connection with Dover by subscribing to the funds of the synagogue.

Jewish Chronicle, 2 September 1921 page 19 Obituary of Hermann Landau OBE. Born 1844. At age 20 came to UK. In early 1864 took up residence in Dover and became teacher in Hebrew in Rev Cohen's school. Had not been there long when Sir Moses Momntefiore arrived at Dover. The congregation wanted to present him with an address of welcome. There was no minister at the time and the Misses Cohen asked Landau to draw up address in Hebrew. On the death of Rev Cohen, Landau assumed management of the school and taught in it for another year then in 1866 he left Dover for Brighton and for his subsequent career.
