London Street Gazetteer

 

A range of names can often be found in primary sources (such as BMD certificates, censuses and newspaper announcements) for any given neighbourhood or street. Depending on who is recording the information and when, a single street might be ascribed to the City or Aldgate, Aldgate or Spitalfields, Spitalfields or Whitechapel, Whitechapel or Mile End. Boundaries change, as do street names, and indeed street numbering.

In the interests of comparability, the 1851 database uses standardised nomenclature which will not always correspond directly with primary sources. In the case of London, neighbourhood boundaries have been standardised, and streets ascribed to them accordingly. This Gazetteer shows how most of the London streets appearing in the Database have been classified. It is an essentially arbitrary classification developed for this Database only. The classification should not be regarded as authoritative in any other context.

Where streets run across two districts, house numbers as in 1851 are used to settle the allocation. The numbering of the street, as well as its name, may have changed since that date. Anyone wishing to trace the exact house where a person lived should not regard the listing in this Database as the last word: more research may be required.
