The Shtetl Finder is a book by Chester G. Cohen, published in 1980. Its full title is "Shtetl Finder Gazetteer: Jewish Communities in the 19th and Early 20th Centuries in the Pale of Settlement of Russia and Poland, and in Lithuania, Latvia, Galicia, and Bukovina, with Names of Residents", 145 pages. It contains entries for 1,200 towns, and was published by Periday Co. of Los Angeles in 1980, and was reprinted by Heritage Books of Bowie, Maryland in 1989.
The Shtetl Finder Gazetteer has long been superceded by the more complete reference work Where Once We Walked: A Guide to the Jewish Communities Destroyed in the Holocaust, edited by Gary Mokotoff and Sallyann Amdur Sack with Alexander Sharon. Revised Edition. (Bergenfield, NJ: Avotaynu, 2002). 736 pages. ISBN 0-886223-15-7. Where Once We Walked (often abbreviated WOWW) is a gazetteer of over 23,500 Central and Eastern European localities, with 35,000 alternate town names, arranged alphabetically and phonetically, with Jewish population figures and other references for each locality.
The JewishGen Gazetteer is an on-line database of over one million localities in Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East, based upon the data of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names (USBGN). The JewishGen Gazetteer contains latitude/longitude information, but no additional information.
