Rostov Synagogue Death Records 1876-1918.
By Eric Feinstein

Background

Rostov-on-Don had the third largest Jewish community in Russia, following Moscow and Saint Petersburg.  This is an index of the death records of the Rostov Synagogue [the Jewish Community] from 1876 until 1918.  In Russian it is called the RECORDING THE ACTS OF DEATH OF JEWS.  The log apparently was begun on December 5, 1876 by the Rabbi Fabian Gnesin [Gnessin.]  Rabbi Fabian Osipovich Gnessin (1837–1891), was an official rabbi of Rostov-on-Don and father of a prominent Jewish Russian family of musicians and philanthropists including Mikhail Gnessin.

This list includes 6,996 entries dating from 1876 to 1918. The fields of information include the number of the act of death—in this case the males and females were enumerated separately each year, the date of death, the age at death, surname, given name, patronymic (father's name), year of birth, and comments.  Out of the 6996 death record entries, there are comments for only fifty of them.

This information was donated by Yuri Dombrovskiy under the supervision of Eric Feinstein and the Russian Research Division of JewishGen.
