By Eric Feinstein

Background

Rostov-on-Don had the third largest Jewish community in Russia, following
Moscow and Saint Petersburg. This is an index of the birth records of the Rostov
Synagogue [the Jewish Community] from 1844 until 1964.

This list includes 8288 entries dating from 1844 to 1964. The fields of information include the number of the act of birth—in this case the birth of boys and girls were enumerated separately each year, the surname of the father, the given name of the father, the patronymic of the father, the maiden name of the mother (given in only 64 cases out of 8288 total entries), the given name of the mother, the patronymic of the mother, the name of the child, the date of birth and comments. The majority of the births were registered between 1844-1920. There were only 12 births registered in 1964.

This information was donated by Yuri Dombrovskiy under the supervision of Eric
Feinstein and the Russian Research Division of JewishGen.
